Insurance For Car Non-Owners
In most cases insurance for cars goes with the vehicle and not the driver. The policy is written in the name of the car owner but the insurance applies to the car, for specified types of coverage of the driver and of the passengers, and of other people and property that might be involved in a claim for damages, whether for personal injury or for damage repairs.
The insurance policy is written to include specific drivers: usually the vehicle owner, principal driver and any family members.
So what if the driver were not specified on the policy? Perhaps a relative or friend borrowed the vehicle, either with your permission or without.
In the permissive situation the insurance coverage on the vehicle is considered first. If the driver has other insurance it is considered as secondary coverage.
If the primary insurance is inadequate to cover the claims then the secondary insurance may apply additionally. This could be a case where liability insurance comes into play.
In other situations where the vehicle is driven without your permission you could swear an affidavit against the driver or lodge a police report that the vehicle was stolen.
So how is insurance applied if you are the driver and not the owner of the vehicle?
In most cases the vehicle’s insurance is primary and covers the damage. Again, if coverage is inadequate then the driver’s insurance may be pursued. If the driver has insurance on a different vehicle then the insurance companies negotiate on who pays, which can lead to a drawn out claims process.
If you as the driver have no other vehicle then you should be sure that the owner has adequate car insurance coverage amounts, and that you have liability insurance, otherwise you might have to come up with the expenses of a claim.

Non-owner car insurance is something I’ve never learned much about, but I’ve always been interested in finding out how someone who doesn’t own a car can be insured to drive. Thanks for covering this topic. Very nicely done!
Useful blog website, keep me personally through searching it, I am seriously interested to find out another recommendation of it.
Not only does insurance protect you and those around you, it is an unsung hero of America’s economic success. Think about it for a second, who else has a stake in protecting your property; if you lease your car or mortgage your house, then the bank does. They want to make sure that their investment is protected. Banks wouldn’t want to lend out money unless they knew that there was a really good chance that they’ll get their money back. Consequently, insurance provides protection for the consumer lending process which is the backbone of the American economy. You might say that insurance greases the wheels of enterprise.
Great post, things are done a little differently here in the UK but what you’re saying makes sense. There are plenty of accidents where i live, with people adding extras to insurance claims which really bumps up the prices of premiums.
